RENASCENCE : Candida Höfer 사진전
Candida Höfer was introduced at the art book curation pop-up event of "Kunstakademie,” by Harbour Press. A first-generation Becher student at the Düsseldorf School of Art, she displayed her solo exhibition for the first time in four years. As soon as you enter the bright white exhibition hall K2 of Kukje Gallery, you can see a spiral staircase and red curtain in her photo.
When I faced each work, I felt as if I was there. The overwhelming experience of being alone in a huge space… Standing in front of photos of grand venues like an opera house, library, and art galleries, all of which have a specific purpose of existence, I felt my own existence and wondered what to do with it. So I looked into each photo closely, one by one.
New sound equipment installed on the wall of Berlin's Komische Oper caught my eye. Built in the late 19th century and had existed for a long time, this opera theatre has been found to be not just about maintaining its previous appearance, but continued to play its role by applying modern technology.
Just then, the title of the exhibition, 'Renaissance', made sense to me. I got to gauge what she was trying to capture with her camera through photos of spaces that temporarily closed due to the pandemic. The French word 'Renaissance' means ‘Revival’. The 14 works the artist presented in this exhibition contain places that have been renovated and rearranged. In particular, the artist visited and photographed these places during the pandemic. I was also enlightened to the fact that these places that have served as public institutions for a long time, used temporary closures as an opportunity for revival and reform. Through the pandemic and social distancing, what seemed like that which should be lost or given up, was in turn renewed and ultimately brought courage, at least to me.
In this way, Candida Höfer's work is based on an exploration of the role and meaning of a place as a public institution. The artist's work is direct with perfect symmetry and sharp images. However, the appearance of the space left behind contains the dynamic of the changes that happen with the passage of time. Candida Höfer's exhibition, which makes you think about the relationship between place, time, and people, is until July 28.

칸디다 회퍼는 하버프레스의 아트북 큐레이션 '쿤스트 아카데미' 팝업에서 소개한 적 있는 작가다. 뒤셀도르프 아트스쿨에서 나온 1세대 베허 학파로서 유형학적 사진의 대가인 그가 4년 만에 국내 솔로 전시를 한다기에 한달음에 달려갔다. 국제갤러리 K2 관의 새하얀 전시장에 들어서자마자 사진 속 나선형의 계단과 붉은 커튼이 눈길을 사로잡았다.
각각의 작품을 마주하고 서면 마치 공간에 들어가 있는 듯한 느낌을 받는다. 거대한 공간에 나 홀로 존재하는 압도적 경험. 오페라 하우스, 도서관, 미술관과 같이 뚜렷한 목적이 있는 공간에 홀로 존재하니 이것을 어떻게 사용하면 좋을지 갈팡질팡하다 구석구석을 찬찬히 뜯어보게 되었다.
베를린 코미셰 오페라의 벽면에 설치된 신식 음향장비들이 눈에 들어왔다. 19세기 후반에 지어져 오랜 시간 동안 존재해온 이 오페라 극장은 이전의 모습을 유지하는 것만이 목적이 아니며 현대의 기술을 적용해 지금도 그 역할을 할 수 있게 이어져오고 있다는 사실을 알게 되었다.
그러자 전시의 제목 ‘르네상스’가 단박에 이해되었다. 일시적 폐쇄를 통해 새로워진 공간을 사진기에 담은 작가의 마음을 가늠할 수 있게 된 것이다. ‘르네상스’는 ‘다시 살아남’을 의미하는 프랑스어이다. 작가가 이번 전시에서 선보이는 14점의 작품들은 이렇게 리노베이션을 해 재정비한 장소들을 담고 있다. 특히 작가는 팬데믹 기간에 이 장소들을 방문하여 사진을 촬영했는데, 오랜 시간 동안 공공 기관으로서 역할해온 장소들이 일시적 폐쇄를 회생과 쇄신의 기회로 삼았다는 사실에 지혜를 얻었다. 전 세계적 위기로 여겨진 팬데믹과 거리 두기를 통해 우리가 잃기만 한 것은 아닐지도 모른다는 용기가 생겼다.
