Vivian Maier (1926-2009) became more known to the world only after her death. Our curiousity for Maier's story grew, partially because there was no one to explain her pictures. To gain a fragment of insight, we had no choice but to stare at her photos.
Our editor, Sanghee Choi, wrote a review about the exhibition.
There was a photographer.
A woman born to seek beauty.
The photographer observed and captured the world by her own standards. She left behind nearly 150,000 photos. Is it because some moments in those frames she took were more beautiful than her solitary life?
Her pictures are not fully developed and archived in a negative state. It was only after the photographer died that she came into the world by a great coincidence. She received praise and recognition from many people. The photos speak of the story of Vivian Maier, a nanny who saw the world through a camera.
Vivian Maier has already been on display several times since her photos were discovered by a real estate agent in Chicago. The exhibition held at Ground Seesaw Seongsu is also part of an exhibition tour of Asia. On the surface, the story of her life may be unfortunate, but she might be one of the luckiest people i've ever seen. A person who was born with great talent and, above all, had the inner strength to continue her work without showing off this talent to anyone.
It is her outstanding aesthetic sense that penetrates the eight sections of the exhibition. Her work as an uneducated, socially low-status woman is frank and beautiful. She is a natural photographer, from her organized composition, eye for seeing the perfect frame, and ability to capture moments.
Photography is a medium that shows the photographer's edited view of the world. Vivian Maier used these photographic features very well. Through the exploration of the world made through her life and the beauty of everyday mundane that she obsessively wanted to collect, I could feel her ambition.
When I was sick of the familiiarty of a monotonous life, seeing her exhibition rose numerous question marks to my mind. About her life, about my life.

비비안 마이어(1926-2009)가 세상에 알려진 것은 그가 죽고 나서입니다. 그의 사진에 대해 누구도 설명해 줄 수 없게 되어서일까요? 그의 이야기가 더욱 궁금해졌습니다. 그를 이해하기 위해 우리는 그의 사진을 뚫어져라 바라볼 수밖에 없었습니다.

어떤 사진가가 있었다.
아름다움을 찾는 마음을 타고난 사람. 이 사진가는 세계를 그의 기준으로 관찰하고 재단해 보았다. 외로운 일생을 살았지만 프레임 속의 어떤 찰나들은 아름다웠기 때문일까. 한 롤에 제한된 숫자의 장면만을 담을 수 있는 필름으로 15만 장의 사진을 남긴다.
그의 사진은 미처 다 현상되지 못하고 네거티브 상태 그대로 아카이브 된다. 사진가가 죽은 후에야 대단한 우연으로 세상에 나와 많은 사람들에게 찬사와 인정을 받게 된다. 사진기를 통해 세상을 본 유모, 비비안 마이어의 이야기이다.
비비안 마이어는 작업물이 시카고의 한 부동산 중개업자에 의해 발견된 이후 큰 유명세를 얻어 이미 여러 차례 전시도 이루어진 인물이다. 이번 그라운드 시소에서의 전시도 아시아 순회전의 일부이다. 표면적으로 그녀의 일생 이야기는 불행하거나, 안타까운 스토리일지 모르지만 내가 본 그녀는 대단한 행운아이다. 뛰어난 재능을 타고났으며, 무엇보다 그 재능을 누구에게 과시하지 않아도 작업을 지속할 내적 힘이 있었던 사람.
8가지 전시의 소주제를 관통하는 것은 그녀의 뛰어난 미적 감각이다. 정식 교육을 받지 않은, 사회적으로 낮은 지위의 여성 신분으로서 그녀가 남긴 작업물은 솔직하고 아름답다. 정돈된 구도와 프레임을 보는 눈, 순간을 포착하는 능력까지 그녀는 타고난 사진가가 맞다.
사진은 사진가가 세상을 바라보는 편집된 시각을 보여주는 매체이다. 비비안 마이어는 이런 사진의 특성을 아주 잘 활용하였다. 그녀의 삶을 통해 이루어진 세상에 대한 탐구, 그녀가 집착적으로 수집하고자 했던 일상의 아름다움을 전시를 통해 어렴풋이 느낄 수 있었다.
단조로운 삶에 염증이 나던 무렵, 전시를 관람하고 나서는 내 마음엔 수많은 물음표가 떠올랐다. 그녀의 삶에 대해, 나의 삶에 대해.
